Interview with Ben

  • What do you enjoy doing in Cornwall?

  • Taking my boys to local farms and beaches, going surfing and doing my own carpentry projects.
  • Top tip for Cornwall?

  • Go for a surf at Gwenvor at sunset.
  • Favourite project in Cornwall?

  • Foulkes Jones. It was a real challenge- a huge oak frame with great big chain-sawn curves.

Ben was born and raised around the picturesque town of St Ives in Cornwall. As a youngster Ben was a fanatical sportsman, his two favourite sports being Rugby Union and Surfing. Ben represented Cornwall in Rugby Union at every age group and would eventually go on to represent England U18’s, Welsh students and Atlantic Canada. As an avid athlete Ben chose to study for a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science at University of Wales, Cardiff (UWIC). During these years Ben majored in Physiology and Biomechanics whilst also playing professional rugby for UWIC in National 1. After completion of his degree Ben travelled extensively playing rugby, working as a physical trainer and therapist and surfing various breaks around the globe. It was during his travels that he met his wife and moved to her native land of Canada. It was during the last seven years in Canada that Ben’s love for carpentry grew exponentially. Ben worked as a carpenter and site supervisor in Vancouver, BC and St John’s, NL. He has since returned back home to Cornwall to continue to improve on his craftsmanship and feels honoured and blessed to be preserving oak framing in his native land at the new Cornwall yard.
